The Columbia Law Review regretfully notes the passing of its longtime Chairman of the Board of Directors, Lou Lowenstein, on Saturday, April 18, 2009. Lowenstein--a graduate of Columbia Business and Law Schools--served as the Review's Editor-in-Chief in 1952-53. Following his graduation from Columbia Law, Lowenstein went on to have a storied career, clerking for Judge Stanley Fuld of the N.Y. Court of Appeals, co-founding the law firm now known as Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP, and serving as the head of Supermarkets General Corporation. Lowenstein returned to Columbia Law School in 1976 as a lecturer-in-law and joined the faculty full time in 1980 to teach corporate law, most recently as the Simon H. Rifkind Professor Emeritus of Finance and Law. He continued to be an active author and critic of Wall Street, a treasured leader of the Coalition for the Homeless, and an indespensible advisor to the Review. Lowenstein's presence and friendship will be dearly missed by scores of Columbia students and Review editors. The Review paid tribute to Lowenstein's extraordinary contribution in its October 2009 issue.
